What is the history behind Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel?
The Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel, located in the historic center of Porto, is a themed boutique hotel that revitalized a building of great architectural and heritage value.
The building originally housed the “Armazém de Papel ao Murinho de S. Domingos”, which later became one of the most renowned stationery shops in Portugal – Araújo & Sobrinho. Today, it is one of the oldest stationery shops in Europe and has remained in the same family for five generations.
The store began selling paper and fine goods imported from England to serve the many English merchants living in Porto in the 19th century due to the Port wine trade.
What started as a small neighborhood stationery shop eventually grew into a thriving business occupying the entire building. Today, the stationery shop still operates on the ground floor next to the hotel reception, and its history and collection are displayed throughout the building.

The history of Araújo & Sobrinho is clearly present throughout the entire building of the Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel. Each floor takes visitors on a journey through time, the very same journey begun by the family almost 200 years ago. What started with the sale of paper imported from England soon evolved into their own workshops for typography, bookbinding and carpentry.

Check-in is available from 3:00 PM.
If you arrive before 3:00 PM and your room is not yet available, don’t worry!

The Porto A. S. 1829 Hotel is located at Largo de S. Domingos, 45-55, 4050-097 Porto. Very close to Rua das Flores, S. Bento Station, Palácio da Bolsa, and Ribeira.
Does Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel have parking?
No, Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel does not have parking. If you bring a car, you must park in one of the public parking lots available in the city of Porto.
Does Porto A. S. 1829 Hotel have a restaurant?
Yes, Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel has a restaurant. Galeria do Largo is a restaurant full of soul, in the heart of Porto.
The restaurant may be closed for lunch and dinner on certain dates. Please check the reservation calendar. Reservations are required.

Made of linen fabric and hand-embroidered with cotton thread, the spelling “mistakes” are an integral part of the tradition and cultural heritage of the Minho region.
