THE DOURO REGION
The Vine
Archaeological evidence shows vines have been cultivated in the Douro region since two to three thousand years ago, with artefacts confirming cultivation along the riverbanks.

PROTECTED LANDSCAPE
The Terraced Vineyards
The terraced vineyards of the Alto Douro, carved into the riverbanks, form a protected landscape – designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
THE PORT WINE
The Douro River
The inextricable connection between wine and the Douro River creates the ideal microclimate essential for producing Douro and Port wine.

Means of transport
The Rabelo Boat
Long before roads or railways existed, the flourishing Port Wine estates were accessible only via the Douro River. It was in this context that the rabelo boats emerged—wooden vessels laden with wine barrels travelling to Gaia’s cellars and beyond.
Evolution
Railway Line
The Douro’s first railway line was completed in 1887. From then on, river transport ceased being the only option. The last recorded rabelo boat transporting wine barrels along the Douro River occurred in 1971.

A Mercearia
